FLUX Online presents two films, "Bialy" by Judith Price, and "All That Remains" by Grace Salez.
Bialy//16mm film//2015
‘Bialy’ is a Polish word, which translates to ‘white’ in English. In the context of this film it’s a play on words - about erasure, whiting out, creating a tabula rasa.
The subject, an older woman, separated from her childhood European culture, now resides in another culture, another time, represented as a sparse visual landscape, filmed in black and white. The accompanying sound (captured on an iPhone in Victoria, Austria and Spain) reflects her interior landscape; it’s all still there – just not visible.
Bialy is as much about what is not seen as what is seen.
