FLUX is pleased to present DIPTYCHS by Judith Price and Johanna Householder and My Colombian Dinner Table by Gabriela Torres Vanegas, two media art works which explore connection across the physical and digital divide.
Shot over several months during the pandemic lockdowns of 2020-2021, DIPTYCHS: 43° N, 79° W / 48° N, 123° W (the latitude and longitude of Toronto, ON and Victoria, BC respectively) captures a series of Zoom conversations held between Price and Householder, where they play with the possibilities and limitations of online communication. The work is "an attempt to restore embodiment and peripheral vision to a world condensed into a 2880 x 1800 slab of metals and electrons" and playfully save face-to-face communication from oblivion.
My Colombian Dinner Table is an augmented reality (AR) artwork inspired by Vanega's memories as a Colombian now living in Canada. The virtual dinner table shows the highlights of her hometown, Cali, and features Colombian designs. Viewers can look around this 2D scene, but they can't touch anything. This limitation is a nod to how the artist sometimes feels distant from her home. It's a way to show that while technology can bring culture close, it's not quite the same as being there.
