The FLUX Gallery is excited to partner once again with The Pacific Peoples Partnership on an exhibition in conjunction with their 12th Annual One Wave Gathering.
Our opening night will feature local protocol and territorial welcome, feature presentations by Melanesian and Polynesian representatives from Vaka Taumako, and the Marshall Islands. The exhibition will feature films and digital installations from Naanelu Anthony, Steve Sxwithul'txw, Iisaak Olam Foundation, Austin Willis, Margaret August, Living Islands, a collection of weaving and artwork curated by Lorilee Wastasecoot, and a Micronesian Outrigger Photography collection.
Every day during the exhibition we will be screening We, the Voyagers , Parts 1 and 2
These films follow a group of people In the Polynesian communities of Taumako and Vaeakau who are building traditional voyaging canoes, or vaka, using only local, sustainable, natural materials. They sail hundreds of miles with no modern equipment, finding their way using comprehensive knowledge of wind, waves, currents, stars, and observations of phenomena that are unknown to modern mariners.
We will also be screening short film and video works such as Shíshálh Nation artist Margaret August’s Resurgence Spindle Whorl.
